Willie Shannon

Willie has been a qualified solicitor for almost 30 years with a background in local authority work, tertiary education and has held a number of senior management roles.

For the past eight years Willie has been a colleges principal, as Director of NAFC Marine Centre and Principal of Shetland College as part of a college merger process. These roles also involved working as an academic partner principal of the University of Highlands & Islands (UHI). Prior to this Willie had a 20 year career in local government, finishing as Assistant Chief Executive of Shetland Islands Council. Earlier roles included Head of Economic Development, Coastal Zone Manager and a Children’s Reporter in Highland.

Willie has extensive public sector experience in local authority work as well as universities and college and can advise clients on a range of matters from day-to-day operational issues through to strategy and governance. Having led a charitable trust and being a charity trustee, he has a sound understanding of the issues in the charity sector and brings first-hand experience to supporting clients.

Away from work Willie is a Director and Vice-Chair of Voluntary Action Shetland (VAS) which is the umbrella body for the third sector. He also sits as an honorary Sheriff at Lerwick and, being quite flexible, is a qualified yoga instructor.
