Conservation and Heritage
Scotland can justly be proud of its culture, natural environment and heritage. Landscape, buildings, artistic or scientific interest, history - this is an area where public meets private and where development and the future can come into conflict with preservation and past.
Scottish Natural Heritage and Historic Scotland have a wide influence on the future of the natural and built environment, which have been shaped for centuries by the actings of individuals.
Conservation is as relevant to private owners as it is to these executive agencies, with wide designatory powers, and to national heritage bodies, such as museums or The National Trust for Scotland.

The competing objectives of ownership, donation, conservation, protection, promotion, public access, tax and finance come into play here and we can assist with advice on the best option to reconcile such objectives:

  • negotiation on Scottish Natural Heritage and Historic Scotland designations, proposals or reinforcement action.

  • strategies for succession and preservation of heritage property within the family.

  • conditional exemption from inheritance tax and capital gains tax for heritage land, buildings and historically associated contents and works of art.

  • negotiation with the Inland Revenue and national heritage bodies.

  • maintenance funds for the financial support of heritage property.

  • sensitive development of heritage/conservation property.
