Chambers, 2006 edition, records that "This firm is "leading the way" for agricultural law in Scotland" and that "the team has a "great depth of knowledge on rural matters". It states further that "the lawyers are particularly rated for their "understanding of the intricacies of dealing with rural property"". Clients are said to have commented on "the friendly service and succinct advice" of our lawyers and that they are "approachable, responsive and concise".
Alasdair Fox and Jim Drysdale are accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as specialists in agricultural law.
The department incorporates the firm's Planning and Environment Unit, headed up jointly by Jim Drysdale and Alastair McKie, the latter accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in planning law.
Chambers describes Alasdair Fox as "a cerebral man, a technically able lawyer with a good grasp of detail", well teamed with Jim Drysdale who provides "attentive and user-friendly service". John Mitchell is identified as the rising star among the firm's next generation - "a very able young lawyer".
The department works across the full range of issues affecting property, business, leisure and recreation, heritage and conservation, including particular skills in innovative land use, development options (in which partner Fiona Gibb is a leading practitioner) and renewable energy. John Mitchell and his team service one of the largest landowners in Scotland, among other clients.
Along with our colleagues in the firm's Private Client department we are rated as a market leader in charity law, with heritage a key focus area. Chambers, 2006 comments that the Charities team (which includes partner Robin Stimpson, an accredited specialist and Legal Adviser to the National Trust for Scotland), is "ahead of the game" in this area - a "name that springs to mind" for charities advice and "capable of going head to head with anyone".
In all its areas of work, the department's aim is to provide high quality advice in a clear and concise way, by appointing either an individual solicitor or a team of lawyers, as appropriate, to a client's business.
Land Resources recognises that it is operating in a rapidly evolving, ever changing regulatory environment. It pioneers diversification projects in a direct response to the changing face of rural Scotland and its approach to advising clients, who include rural landowners, large and small, owner-occupiers, tenants, companies (including residential property developers), charities and individuals, is to understand not only the issues which affect them but also their philosophy and objectives.
The department works increasingly closely with colleagues in our Private Client, Commercial Real Estate, Employment and Parliamentary Departments/Units. Fiona Stephen has recently taken on the role of Property Litigator with special responsibility for Scottish Land Court work.
