Hydro-electric |

Energy generated from the movement of water is cheap, clean and reliable. Hydro-electric schemes have been important in supporting economic development in remote rural areas of Scotland. They are generally small scale run-of-river or small storage schemes of less than 10 Megawatts power output. As with windfarms, they require either planning permission or the consent of the Scottish Ministers. |

In reaching a decision it is can be difficult for local authorities to look beyond the concerns of local residents to the wider environmental benefits provided by renewable energy. |

Hydro schemes raise their own particular planning and environmental problems, as they often tend to be in environmentally sensitive aquatic sites. This will be problematic where the watercourse has a run of migratory fish (Sea Trout and Salmon) or rare aquatic flora and fauna. An early dialogue with Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency is essential.
Hydro-electric projects require a range of legal expertise covering Property, Planning and Environmental, Corporate, Financing and Tax matters. We are able to advise both developers and landowners on all legal aspects arising from hydro-electric developments.
