Energy
Most of our energy work involves renewable energy projects. We are highly experienced in advising on windfarms and hydro-electric schemes, and are at the forefront of Scottish developments in the field of biomass energy. These projects require a collaborative approach, bringing together experts from across the firm to advise on Property, Planning and Environmental, Corporate, Financing and Tax planning issues. We specialise in all of these areas to provide a bespoke service to developers of energy projects and to the landowners on whose land they may be sited.
Windfarms and hydro-electric schemes are good examples of sustainable rural diversification. Developments in modern technology now allow us to better exploit our natural surroundings for clean, green, renewable energy resources.
The promotion of renewable energy developments is at the heart of the Government's planning and energy policy. While energy policy is a matter reserved to the UK Government, the Scottish Executive has legislative competency for planning and environmental matters and in addition the Scottish Ministers have responsibility for issuing consents for most of the biggest energy developments.

This means that the Scottish Executive exerts a powerful influence on renewable energy developments. The Scottish Ministers have a policy commitment to the effect that 40% of Scotland's electricity production will be met from renewable sources by 2020. This means that, with many more windfarms and hydro-electric schemes needed, the boom in their development in Scotland will continue. With our experience to date in many large and small renewable energy projects we are very well placed to facilitate this growth.

Recent experience

· Advising GreenPower on their Griffin Windfarm Development (capital value in excess of £100 million). This involves a multi-disciplinary team giving advice on land leasing, access, grid connection, planning and project funding issues. If approved it will be one of the largest (if not the largest) on-shore windfarms in Europe. We also continue to advise GreenPower on all their other small to large scale windfarm and hydro-electric projects.

· Advising one of the majority landowners on all legal issues concerning their interest in Scottish Power's Blacklaw Windfarm throughout the inception and completion of that project. Blacklaw is now the largest onshore windfarm yet built in the UK, powering approximately 80,000 homes annually, and was commissioned in Spring 2005.

· Advising the Buccleuch Group on the successful acquisition of Buccleuch Bioenergy Limited, their in-house biomass boiler systems and wood chip based heating applications company.
