For 35 years Alasdair has been involved in high profile and high value transactions covering the range of rural property, including the sale and purchase of estates, farms, salmon fishings and forestry. He has also been involved in valuable mineral and open-cast mining options and agreements and specialises in land use and diversification.

His main focus nowadays is advising on agricultural law and land reform on which he has lectured and written widely. Alasdair provides advice on such matters to other firms of solicitors as well as a number of local authorities. He was a consultant to the Scottish Executive on land reform and agricultural holdings. He also acted as a special adviser to the Scottish Law Commission on dispute resolution and irritancy in leases. He gave evidence on two occasions to the Scottish Parliament during its consideration of the Land Reform (Scotland) Bill, on behalf of the Law Society of Scotland.

As Head of the Anderson Strathern Land Resources Department, Alasdair retains overall responsibility for a number of the firm's high profile landed clients. He acts for both landlords and tenants. He also has a widely acknowledged practice in private education.

Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession 2007 Edition describes him as "one of the most prominent rural lawyers in Scotland who can take a global view of the industry" and as "a highly respected lecturer and author". He was short-listed for the 2004 Scottish Legal Awards in the Specialist Solicitor of the Year category.

He is co-author (with Lord Justice Clerk Gill) of 'Agricultural Holdings Styles' and annotated Part 2 of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 for Current Law Statutes. He has appeared both on television and radio, is frequently quoted in the press and writes a regular column on rural matters for the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland.

Alasdair is a member of the Law Society of Scotland's Rural Affairs Committee, of the Legal and Fiscal Policy Committee of the Scottish Rural Property Business Association and the Scottish Arbiters and Valuers' Association.
