STOP PRESS!
With the Christmas break now well and truly behind us, resolutions made and already broken, it's back to business in the Employment Unit. To kick off 2008 we are delighted to welcome Claire Hendry back to work after a period of maternity leave.
There's no doubt that 2008 will be an interesting year. The first development to watch out for is the annual round of increases to the limits on compensation that can be awarded by employment tribunals, which take effect from 1 February 2008. The new limits will be as follows:
-
Limit on a "week's pay" for the purposes of calculating a Statutory Redundancy Payment or Unfair Dismissal Basic Award will increase to £330.
-
Maximum Basic Award or Statutory Redundancy Payment will increase to £9,900.
-
Maximum Compensatory Award for Unfair Dismissal will increase to £63,000.
-
Minimum Basic Award for dismissal on trade union, health and safety, occupational pension scheme trustee, employee representative and on working time grounds only will increase to £4,400.
-
Minimum compensation for employees excluded or expelled from a trade union will increase to £6,900.
-
Maximum award in Breach of Contract claims has not changed and remains at £25,000.
