For those interested in promoting or restricting development, up-to-date knowledge of the planning policies for their local area is a must. Together, the Structure and Local Plans for an area inform the type and location of development which will be acceptable to a local authority and the various policies and factors they will take into account when determining applications for planning consent. When these documents are under review, those with an interest have the opportunity to make representations to the planning authority/ies involved. By getting involved in this process, developers and individuals have an invaluable chance to influence the policies and allocations of land for development which will shape their local area in the coming years.

Key stages in the development plan process

This is a particularly important time for vigilance in the monitoring of development plans due to the imminent reforms brought about by the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006. By the end of this year, the current system of Local and Structure Plans will be replaced by a new hierarchy of Local Development Plans and Strategic Development Plans. Already some local authorities are choosing to abandon their current review processes in favour of waiting for the new regime to come into force.
