Martin Whiteford


Martin is a senior associate in our Infrastructure team.
He is a construction and projects specialist with particular expertise in advising on procurement strategies and in the drafting, negotiation and approval of development and funding agreements, construction and engineering contracts, partnering agreements, consultancy agreements and warranties for large scale education, cultural, leisure, retail and office developments, energy and utilities, and projects within the public sector including PFI/PPP.
Martin advises clients not only on contract drafting and negotiation but also in relation to contract management issues and claims avoidance. His clients include a number of national retailers and developers, universities, contractors, specialist sub-contractors, financial institutions and public sector bodies.
Martin also advises on the requirements of the EU public procurement regime. Recent experience includes high profile and complex projects for Edinburgh Napier University, Glasgow School of Art, National Trust for Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo, the Hydrogen Office and Stirling University.
In addition, Martin is increasingly involved in advising on renewable energy projects including advising on the procurement and construction of an innovative wind turbine/ hydrogen fuel cell energy system and on a number of biomass projects. He has recent experience of drafting agreements for the supply of heat and power from renewable sources and option agreements relating to renewables sites.
Martin received a Masters in Environmental Law from the University of Nottingham and maintains a strong interest in the implications of environmental legislation on our infrastructure needs and the low carbon economy.
